Disney Pin Collector’s Guide: Free-D vs Pin-On-Pin
What is a free-D Disney pin, and how does it differ from a pin-on-pin 3D design? Disney likes to keep the adventure known as pin collecting fun by adding unique features to basic enamel pins. We are intrigued by the elaborate designs of some 3D pins. Many are stacked metal cutouts, while others will have soft rubbery features. Some of my favorite pins use these elaborate dimensional effects, so let’s explore what they are and how to identify and care for each type.

Disney Pins with Pin-on-Pin Elements
Often the most sought-after and intricate Disney pins will feature characters with coordinating background scenes telling a miniature story. Layering one pin on top of another in a pin-on-pin design pulls the character forward in the scene, creating a dynamic effect. This common technique produces a detailed miniature diorama highlighting the Disney character in it.
- Material: Two metal pin layers
- Effect: Creates visual depth and movement
- Common Uses: Characters popping out of backgrounds, layered storytelling scenes
- Care considerations: Thicker pins are heavier and could fall from lanyards. Design elements could fall off.

Disney Pins with Free-D Elements
Similar to the pin-on-pin features, adding a free-D element to pins adds a three-dimensional feel to the design but with a soft, rubbery texture. This rubber-like material can be formed in bright and unusual colors, and additions are often used to highlight specific features like character accessories, food items, or whimsical details. The rubber material gives the pin a playful, tactile quality that stands out from traditional enamel pins. Additionally, the rubber material can be added to a metal element and attached as a pin-on-pin with free-D.
- Material: Soft rubber accents
- Effect: Adds texture and depth
- Common Uses: Ice cream scoops, balloons, character features.
- Free-D rubber texture can be added to a pin-on-pin element for additional dimension.

Which 3D Design Elements Do Collectors Prefer?
Both free-D and pin-on-pin designs provide unique three-dimensional options for collectors. Because of how complex it is to add these extra layers, these pins will usually be produced by Disney in limited quantities. Additionally, these pins are especially difficult to counterfeit due to the complexity of their production.
Free-D pins are terrific options for collectors since many pins in the free-D style have lower editions. There are open editions issued by Disney from time to time, but not often. However, Loungefly, and Box Lunch have more recently issued open edition pins with free-D elements. Keep in mind that the soft material can easily get dirty and is hard to clean, so these pins aren’t ideal for wearing on a lanyard during pin trading at the parks. Ideally, Disney pins with free-D designs are best stored in a pin collector’s case, board, or book.

Pin-on-pin designs also come in limited editions, but most of this 3D style will have larger runs so they can be easier to obtain. However, because of the layered metal elements, the pins tend to be heavy, making wearing them on a lanyard difficult. Also, the layers can easily catch on to other pins or objects and break off. Use caution when wearing any favorite pins with pin-on-pin designs on a lanyard at the parks for this reason.
