Disney Pewter Figurines ~ How Rare Are They?

Disney pewter figurines were highly collectible and sought after in the 1990s, but then these unique silver-colored collectibles seemingly disappeared overnight. At a local vintage shop, we stumbled upon a small metal train engine that was pulling a few Disney characters on its cars. It sparked a memory from back when I saw a similar birthday train decades ago. These Disney pewter figurines were a set collected annually each birthday year to form a train full of characters as a child grew up. We considered getting one of these figurines for one of our boys but ultimately opted for the Emmett Kelly clowns instead. However, this unexpected discovery leads us to question the fate of collectible pewter figurines: if they are currently being produced, are they considered rare?

Looking into the history…

With a bit of research, we discovered there were several different manufacturers of Disney pewter figurines. But while these figurines were abundant in the 1990s, the collaborations pewter companies and Disney are all but gone. Almost all of these pewter manufacturers were in the eastern United States; sadly, most are no longer operating. The few that do are not currently producing pewter figurines and products for Disney. I would suspect it is due to a lack of demand. There were dozens of pewter figures produced each year at all price points. And at some point, supply exceeded demand, and the lines were ended.

While these may not have been profitable long-term product lines, the abrupt stoppage of all new designs makes the older pieces very valuable indeed. Let’s look at the c

Hudson Pewter

~ These items were mass-produced and sold at an affordable price at Disney Park souvenir shops and local gift shops alike. There were several sets issued by this manufacturer. The most noteworthy sets include: the Disney Character Birthday Train, the Disney Marching Band Train, and the Snow White set including all seven dwarfs, the cottage, and the evil witch. Some pieces were available with painted accents, but most of these Disney pewter figurines were unpainted designs. On occasion, these small figures were sometimes sold with branded red boxes. These bright red paper containers had both a Mickey and Co. logo and Hudson Pewter embossed in gold imprints. Most collectors did not keep the boxes, so it is rare to find figurines on the secondary market with their original box. Hudson Pewter did do several affordable multi-character scenes similar to Chilmark too.
