Old Disney Pins Promotions and Advertising
Check your junk drawer (or better yet your grandparents’) for old Disney pins from advertising promotions. Seriously, some of these ad-promo pins are quite rare. Our love of Disney came well before our addiction to pin collecting. In the 1980s and 1990s, we’d often scour the newspaper and store shelves for Disney promotions featuring Mickey or other characters, often as a mail-in coupon or advertising a gift with purchase. At a time before the surge of collecting pins began, many people sent in for all sorts of items, like cookie jars, watches, or playsets. And some of these promos were for pins.

In the decades before lanyards became common accessories at Disney Parks, people often tossed smaller trinkets and pins into junk drawers or discarded them. We recently found several of our older Disney pins by going through boxes of “junk.” A few of these brooches and pins are rather difficult to find now. People ultimately considered the early promotional items—distributed in abundance—to be of little value. So, they eventually lost or forgot them, and the old Disney pins that survived have become quite rare.
The good news is that many collectors often overlook older Disney pins that advertisers and promoters once used, which helps keep those pins affordable. Because promo pins are not often for sale on eBay or Poshmark, resellers find it harder to determine their actual values. Therefore, they sometimes will sell at low prices. For those new to pin trading, this is a great way to add unique and fun items to their collection. You can discover these unique pins at flea markets, on eBay, or even in your junk drawer! So, let’s explore some of the old Disney advertising and promotional pins that are available.

Early Disney Pin Promotions of the 70s, 80s, and 90s
Well before the phenomenon known as Disney Pin Trading began in 1999, pins were a popular giveaway for all types of advertising. Lapel pins, often called “flair,” were part of pop culture at the time, and many businesses handed out small pins and small buttons to promote their brands. Disney recognized putting their characters on small pins worked well as fashion accessories and often tied them into promotions for new movie releases or other special events. Also, Disney collaborated with several companies before the millennium, creating pins and other merchandise, including Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Kodak.
Disneyland’s 30th Anniversary
- One of the first vintage Disney Pin promotions coincided with Disneyland’s 30th Anniversary in 1985. Park guests received a ticket when arriving, and if the ticket said “PIN,” they would obtain their free souvenir from the Gift Giver Machine. Lucky winners received one of several designs featuring various lands and characters. Additionally, Disney sold these pins as a framed commemorative set in 1986.

Adidas
- In the early 1980s, a co-branded pin with Goofy in running gear wearing the iconic striped Adidas shoes was released. Adidas had just expanded into sports clothing, and Goofy’s classic sports cartoons might have been their inspiration. Goofy is on a rectangular enamel pin with the Adidas name and trefoil logo on the side. Collectors can identify the earliest pins by their brooch backs and the “Walt Disney Prod.” signature. And newer issues have a tack-pin-style back with butterfly closure and “Disney” as a signature.
Coca-Cola
- A limited edition set of 61 pins was offered to Cast Members in 1986. These sets included individual portraits of Disney characters with the scripted logo for Coca-Cola below.

McDonald’s and Coca-Cola
- Dozens of variations of McDonald’s employee pins were created in collaboration with Coca-Cola featuring Disney characters in the 1970s to 1990s. These pins were often timed to promote a new movie, video, or Happy Meal toy release.
Kodak
- Journey into the Imagination sponsor tie-in released in 1989 with the Kodak logo.
- Fab 4 individual patriotic character pins with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald available as a free gift with purchase of film.

Nestlé
- Nestle created promotional pins for products sold in Europe, notably Trio Cereal featuring Donald Duck’s nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie and a Griess-Bar pin featuring Baloo from The Jungle Book.
Disney Pin Promotions and Sponsorships ~ 1999-2000s
A major marketing strategy was embraced by Disney in the very late 1990s. As we welcomed 2000, Disney pin trading was officially launched at Walt Disney World. As part of the Millennium Celebration, commemorative enamel tack pins in hundreds of colorful designs were sold at all Disney Parks, resorts, and stores worldwide. There was an aggressive advertising campaign to promote this new collectible as a hobby. Several types of pins were available with an opportunity to collect them all on a weekly or monthly basis.
Starting in 2000, major travel agencies booking Disney vacations offered free promotional pin lanyards for every booked guest. The lanyards included a free pin or two to keep or trade. Walt Disney Travel Company, American Express, and AAA began promoting annual exclusive trading pins as part of their vacation packages. These promotional freebies sparked guests’ interest in pin trading by design. Disney wanted to inspire everyone to start a personal pin collection of their own. There were numerous variations of different travel agency promotional pin designs distributed as souvenirs over the years, making them fun to discover on a trading lanyard or board today.
Walt Disney Travel Company Pins
- Cast members working as travel agents for the Walt Disney Travel Company received pins to wear in the late 1980s and through the 1990s. These rectangular epoxy pins featured Mickey Mouse carrying a suitcase and “Earforce One,” the corporate jet.
- Starting in 2001, Walt Disney Travel Company began including a free pin for every guest that booked a vacation package. The pins were distributed to each guest upon arrival. The first one was Mickey and Minnie in a pink car. Eventually, they changed up the designs but always had a Disney character in a mode of transportation. They used everything from planes and automobiles to trains and monorails.

AAA Travel Company Pins
- Collectible round epoxy pins featuring the Fab 5 in an old car were given as awards annually to Disney’s AAA Club of the Year from 1998 to 2011.
- Similar to Disney Travel, AAA began giving pins to everyone that booked a vacation package. These also began in 2001 and had Disney characters; the very first ones featured Chip and Jiminy Cricket driving small cars. Soon after, the designs expanded to show additional tourist-type activities, like Donald with a yellow inner tube ready for the pool and Mickey in a Hawaiian shirt holding a camera.

American Express Travel Pins
- Round, “White Glove Treatment” epoxy pins were given to cast members in the late 1990s.
- Notable guest pins include Simba with the American Express logo and a Sorcerer Mickey’s Hat 100 Years of Magic pin.
- Another “100 Years of Magic” pin was an exclusive pin for members of the press. It features Mickey ears on the corner of a green American Express card.
Alaskan Airlines “Spirit of Disneyland“ Pin Set
- This 2003 boxed pin set features 5 exclusive pins, with the centerpiece being the replica of the Alaskan Airlines Boeing 737-400 adorned with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. These pins are an exclusive gift to Alaskan Airline Vacation Package travelers commemorating the new service to Disneyland.
- In addition to the plane replica, the “Spirit of Disneyland” set included Pilot Mickey, Flight Attendant Minnie, Tourist Goofy, and Vacationer Donald.

These travel pins from various companies were all distributed in abundance to guests at Disney Parks. But while these promotions were designed to create excitement around the activity of pin trading, many people brought them home as souvenirs and forgot about them. Therefore, people often find them at thrift stores, garage sales, and in junk drawers today.
Corporate Sponsored Disney Pins for Disneyland’s 50th

When Disneyland celebrated its golden 50th anniversary, several major corporations eagerly jumped on the uber-successful pin-trading bandwagon with promotional pins for “The Happiest Celebration on Earth.” Some promotional Disney pins were distributed as gifts with purchase, while others were members-only exclusives. Additionally, some rarer pins were only available through mail-in offers. Corporate sponsors included many longtime partners like Kodak, Disney Vacation Club, and Visa. But there were newcomers too, including Energizer and Smucker’s/Jif and Kellogg’s.
Old Disney promotional pins from vacation packages or as gifts with purchase during the Happiest Celebration are in abundance and still available today at affordable prices. But pins that required saving labels to mail in or bring into a Disney location can be harder to find. Let’s take a look at Nana T’s favorite rare Disney pin promotions:
SMUCKER’S/JIF Mail-In Promotion
This pin-on-pin treasure is a Smucker’s Jif mail-in exclusive promotion. Goofy is a Disney Parks tourist complete with mouse ears. To obtain this rare 2006 pin, one had to send in labels, but it was well worth the effort.

Kellogg’s Collect and Save Promotion
This cute teacup spinner pin is a Kellogg’s exclusive promotion in 2005 for Disneyland’s Happiest Celebration. To obtain a pin, one had to collect 3 certificates from Kellogg’s cereal and redeem them at a specific Disney Store location.

Hanes Comfort Rewards 2008 Older Disney Pin Promotion

Nana T has always been a fan of Disney T-shirt pins. And the Hanes Walt Disney World t-shirt release is my absolute favorite series. These pins were only available in 2008 and promoted the pin trading hobby to families. By collecting point certificates as proof of purchasing Hane’s children’s underwear, one could mail in the points for a “Where Dreams Come True” lanyard or one of several pins. There are a total of 11 pins in this series, including Mickey and one individual shirt pin for each of his friends, the Fab 4 in a group pose, a trio of princesses, Tinker Bell, Grumpy, and The Rockin’ Roller Coaster attraction. Some of the pins have patterned backgrounds, while others are solid colors, and all feature a pin-on-pin design.

Sponsored Disney Pin Promotions Today
While not as common as when pin trading began, there are still corporate-sponsored pin promotions today. But the pins are in high demand, so they do sell very fast. Starbucks tumblers with exclusive mystery pins featuring park attractions sold out quickly in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World in the summer of 2025. And the sponsors of the new Ravensburger Disney trading card game, Lorcana, will often offer pins to players in tournaments. These Disney Lorcana pins have a crossover appeal to both card game players and pin collectors.
Ravensburger’s Disney Lorcana
- Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game pins are truly promotional pins. Disney gives them only as gifts or prizes to promote the game. The first pin release was Mickey as the Brave Little Tailor, which was given out at GenCon in 2023. It was also available as a gift at the D23 expo that same year. Since that initial release a variety of new pins are continually being issued with character depictions and the different colors of the Lorcana logo. These pins are very collectible and hard to obtain since you must receive them as a gift or tournament prize.
Starbucks Disney Parks Pins
- In 2021, Starbucks released its first cooperative pin set with Disney to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World. Since then, additional pin releases have occurred sporadically at both Disney World and Disney California Adventure.
- Summer 2025 brought a big release of promotional pins with the Starbucks Tumbler Mystery sets. Each tumbler is being sold with two mystery pins. There are six different tumblers in all, one for each park. And there are 8 different mystery pins featuring different attractions within each park. Therefore, there are 48 new Starbucks mystery dangle pins to collect.

While this list is far from a full list of all the corporate sponsors who cooperated to create Disney pins in the past, it is a useful starting point. There will be more old Disney pins from promotions and advertising added to this article as we continue to collect and discover them. We plan to scour our junk drawers and local flea markets soon, hoping to uncover more of these often-overlooked treasures.
